Arizona Young Artists' Competition

A collaboration between the Herberger Theater Center and Center Dance Ensemble. The preliminary competition takes place over a three-day period, a day each reserved for actors, singers and modern dancers. The competition is open to young performing artists who are adjudicated by three distinguished panels of judges. Four students are selected from each discipline to compete in the Arizona Young Artists' Finals. Winners receive a $1,000 cash prize.

The Arizona Young Artists' Competition provides an opportunity to showcase the diverse and emerging talent of young Arizona artists, introducing them to the audition process, and providing an opportunity for them to interact with highly-regarded arts professionals.

2008 Competition Requirements

Aspiring performing artists between the ages of 16 - 20 are invited to enter this ninth annual performing event at the Herberger Theater Center. Four finalists in the categories of acting, modern dance and voice will be selected by qualified judges from preliminary auditions, March 25 - 27. A $1,000 cash prize will be awarded in each discipline at the final competition. All finalists receive a cash award. Entry in more than one category is encouraged.

Registrants will be notified after March 3 of your preliminary audition time.

There is a MANDATORY dress rehearsal for ALL finalists at 1pm on Saturday, March 29.

Preliminary Audition Information

Acting
Tuesday, March 25
Actors perform two (2) contrasting monologues (one classical) of no more than two (2) minutes each. For information, call Judy Rollings at (602) 254-7399 x106 or at jrollings@herbergertheater.org. Acting registrants are invited to participate in a workshop How to best prepare for AYAC, to be held on February 9 at 1pm. Contact Judy Rollings by February 1 for information and to register.

Voice
Wednesday, March 26
Vocalists perform from memory one classical (aria, artsong) and one musical theatre selection. Total time not to exceed six (6) minutes. No taped accompaniment, transposing or a cappella singing. Accompanist provided or bring your own - no self-accompanying. For information, contact Arlyn Brewster at (602) 943-1029 or at ambrewster@aol.com. Voice applicants are invited to attend a movement, blocking/gesture workshop on March 15 at 2pm at Dance Theater West, 3925 E. Indian School Rd. Modern Dance
Thursday, March 27
Dancers perform one piece which totals no more than four (4) minutes. Provide a CD of your music. Finalists must attend a MANDATORY technical rehearsal on Friday, March 28 at 4pm.
