In 2001, the Herberger Theater Center began a collaboration with Free Arts of Arizona to heal young lives through the performing arts. Homeless, abused and neglected children living in group homes, shelters and residential treatment programs throughout Maricopa County have an opportunity to create and experience the arts through a two-week theater camp at the Herberger Theater Center.
During the camp, guest artists and creative volunteers introduce the children to improvisation, character development, mask making, costumes, props and technical components of theater. The production is totally created, rehearsed and performed by the young campers and culminates with a performance on the Herberger Theater Center's Stage West.
In 2008, 18 kids between the ages of 13 and 16 participated. On the final night of camp, the kids gave their final performance and this year we had a record crowd our largest in the past eight years of the program! The audience was treated to a powerful dance routine and two young ladies shared their beautiful voices with a solo performance.
The teens were incredibly positive, motivated and hard working throughout the camp. They fearlessly shared their heart-wrenching stories with the group and then with the audience. They bonded as a group and left feeling better about themselves and their life experiences.
As one camper said, Theatre Camp has let me be free to be me!
Free Arts of Arizona is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing the healing effects of the arts to abused, neglected and homeless children. Since August 1993, Free Arts has provided services to over 14,000 children in Maricopa County.
